Hotel Central

Hotel Central is a two-star hotel in the heart of Tirana, on Rruga Karl Gega beside the site of the city's former railway station. It is a practical, no-frills address for travellers who want to be within walking distance of the capital's landmarks: Skanderbeg Square, the National Museum of History and the Clock Tower are all around a 15-minute stroll away, and guests rate the location 8.5.

Rooms are simple and air-conditioned, each with a wardrobe, a TV, free WiFi and a balcony overlooking a quiet side street. Doubles, triples and quadruples are available, some with a private bathroom and others sharing facilities, which keeps rates low for families and small groups travelling on a budget.

Downstairs there is a restaurant serving Italian, vegan and halal breakfast, plus a bar for cocktails and high tea, a minimarket and an outdoor fireplace. Free private parking on site is a genuine rarity this close to the centre, and the 24-hour front desk helps earn the property its 8.7 score for staff.

The hotel's rooms

Hotel Central has five room types, from doubles for couples to triples and quadruples that suit families or small groups. All are air-conditioned and share the same essential style: a wardrobe, a TV, free WiFi and a balcony looking onto a quiet side street rather than the main road.

The main difference is the bathroom. Two types come with a private bathroom with shower, towels and toilet paper, while the economy rooms share facilities with other guests and cost noticeably less. Sizes run from 16 to 21 square metres, and bed configurations are listed for each type below, exactly as the property reports them.

Location and what to see

Getting there

Hotel Central stands on Rruga Karl Gega, the street that marks the site of Tirana's old central railway station, closed in 2013 and now remembered by the Lokomotiva monument, a preserved steam engine. Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa is roughly 13 km away, about 25 to 35 minutes by taxi depending on traffic. The cheapest alternative is the airport shuttle, which runs around the clock roughly once an hour and drops passengers beside Skanderbeg Square, a 15-minute walk from the hotel; tickets are bought on board for a few euros and can be paid in lek or in euro. Long-distance and international coaches use the terminals on the northern edge of the centre, within easy reach of the hotel, and there is free private parking in a garage on site if you arrive by car — a real advantage in a city where central parking is scarce. Once you are here, the centre is best covered on foot.

What to see

The walk south along Bulevardi Zogu I Parë leads straight to Skanderbeg Square, the vast pedestrian heart of the capital, in about fifteen minutes. Around it stand the National Museum of History with its mosaic facade, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower and the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet. A few streets further sit two of Tirana's most striking museums of the communist years: the House of Leaves, the former secret-police listening centre, and the underground bunker of Bunk'Art 2. For a break from the traffic, the small squares and parks along the way — Sheshi Paris among them — are pleasant places to pause, while the Blloku district, once closed to ordinary Albanians, is where the city eats and drinks after dark. Set aside a half-day for the Dajti Ekspres cable car, closed on Tuesdays, for views over the city and the mountains. May and September bring the most comfortable weather.
